The Gap is a gem of a neighborhood found within Chicago’s historic Bronzeville neighborhood.
The neighborhood’s name is the result of urban development in the middle of the last century. At that time, new apartment buildings Lake Meadows and Prairie Shores were constructed on the East side of the area. The Illinois Institute of Technology sat to the west and the area, or gap, of homes in between was seemingly forgotten in terms of Chicago city planning. As a result it became known as The Gap.
In the late 1980’s, Chicago designated The Gap as the Calumet / Giles / Prairie Historic District.
