Uptown's boundaries are from Foster on the north, Irving Park on the south, Lake Michigan on the east, and Ravenswood on the west. The area has blends of modern style and unkept mesiness boardering on dingy. Uptown is a flavor of traditional Chicago with its mix of residents, the community atmosphere, and its proximity to the lake.

Edgewater, once part of Uptown became a sepereate community in 1980. Edgewater's boundaries include Foster Avenue on the south, Devon Avenue on the north, Ravenswood Avenue on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east.

Uptown is home of the Green Mill, once a speakeasy of the infamous Al Capone. The Green Mill is a world-class destination for jazz musicians and enthusiasts. It's just around the corner from the Aragon Ballroom and the Riviera Nightclub, two of the more popular mid-sized entertainment venues in Chicago.

Uptown was built in the late 1800s as a lakeside resort community for the wealthy and the lake is still the top attraction. Like many areas of Chicago, Uptown began to decline after World War II and the majority of its affluent residents fled to the suburbs. Revitalization efforts have paid off in that Uptown has big-name bookstores, coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques.

Edgewater is a sprawling but close-knit North Side community whose largest neighborhood is Andersonville which was developed in the mid-1800s as a Swedish community. (please see separate description)

During the past 20 years, many of the area's architectural gems have been renovated and restored by individuals and developers intent on salvaging the heritage of this lakefront neighborhood. While it is growing in popularity, there are still many opportunities to find affordable renovated and renovation-ready properties in Uptown.
